Quick answer

The board is ready as soon as the page opens. Same phone: pass it back and forth, and the score is kept. Computer: pick Easy, Medium, Hard or Expert (Expert never loses on 3x3). By text link: make your move, tap Send, and your partner plays theirs from the link. No account, no app, no ads. Boards: 3x3, 4x4 and Ultimate.

This is free tic tac toe online for 2 players, with three ways to play: pass one phone back and forth, play the computer from Easy to Expert, or play by text, where every move is a link you send. Pick 3x3, 4x4 or Ultimate. There is nothing to sign up for and no ads.

How do you play tic tac toe by link?

  1. Choose By text link above the board, and tap your name if you want to change it.
  2. Make your move, then tap Send. Your phone opens the share sheet, so you can send it by iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram or any chat.
  3. Your partner taps the link. They see your move on the board, play theirs, and send a link back. It works between iPhone and Android.
  4. Rematch when the game ends. The score of every round travels in the link, and the first move switches each round.

Your phone remembers which side you play, so opening your own link will not let you move for your partner by mistake. If you open a move and want to answer later, the page shows it at the top next time you come back. If you also miss iMessage games on Android, see GamePigeon for Android.

How do you win at tic tac toe?

With perfect play from both sides, classic tic tac toe always ends in a draw. Wins come from mistakes, and these are the ones to look for:

Want to practice? Play the computer on Hard, then try Expert. Expert never loses on 3x3, so a draw against it is a perfect game.

What else can we play by link?

The same three modes work in Four in a Row for 2 players and Battleship for 2 players, where your fleet stays hidden on your own phone. For games that need no board at all, see games to play over the phone and online games for couples. FAQ

How do I play tic tac toe with a friend online?

Choose By text link above the board, make your first move and tap Send. Your friend opens the link, sees your move, plays theirs and sends a link back. You take turns like that by text, WhatsApp or DM. Neither of you needs an account or an app.

Can two people play tic tac toe on one phone?

Yes. Same phone (Same screen on a computer) is the default mode. Pass the phone after each move. Tap a name to change it, and the score stays on the phone for your next game.

Can I play tic tac toe against the computer?

Yes. Choose Computer and pick a level. Easy plays mostly at random, Medium misses some threats, Hard plays well but slips now and then, and Expert never loses on the classic 3x3 board (we test it against every possible game). You and the computer take turns going first, and a game you leave counts as a loss.

Can you always win tic tac toe?

No. If both players never make a mistake, classic 3x3 tic tac toe always ends in a draw. You win when the other player misses a threat, most often a fork, where you have two ways to make three in a row at once.

What is Ultimate tic tac toe?

Ultimate is nine small boards inside one big board. The square you pick in a small board sends your opponent to the matching small board. Win a small board to claim it, and win three small boards in a row to win the game. The boards you can play in are outlined.

Is my game saved?

Yes. A game on one phone or against the computer survives a reload. In link games the board and the score live inside the link itself, so nothing goes to a server, and your phone remembers which side you play.
