GamePigeon for Android: what works between iPhone and Android (2026)
Quick answer
As of October 2026, GamePigeon is not available for Android. It is an iMessage-only app for iPhone and iPad, so it does not work in chats with Android phones, even with RCS. An unofficial Android app called OpenPigeon can play GamePigeon games, but only through OpenBubbles, which needs a one-time Mac or always-online iPhone and is not supported by Apple or GamePigeon. The simpler fix is a game on both stores: Cupie for playing live on a video call, Plato for 50+ classic games, and Words With Friends, 8 Ball Pool, UNO!, Chess.com or Lichess for turn-based play.

Updated October 2026. No, GamePigeon is not available for Android. It is an iMessage app for iPhone and iPad, so an Android phone can't receive or play a GamePigeon game, even now that iPhones text Android over RCS. If you and your partner are on different phones, use a game that is on both stores. Cupie is a free video calling app for couples, on iPhone and Android, where you play games together live inside the call, including Pool, Minigolf, Cup Pong and Chess. Below: what works between iPhone and Android, the one unofficial workaround, and 8 alternatives.
Want the answer for one game? Our free GamePigeon game finder shows, for each of the 24 games, a free way to play it between an iPhone and an Android phone today, with a link you can send your partner.

Is GamePigeon compatible with Android?
No. The App Store lists GamePigeon as "Only for iMessage". It runs as an extension of Apple's Messages app, and Apple's support page says you get iMessage apps from the App Store for iMessage inside Messages. Android phones don't have iMessage, so there is nothing for an Android user to open. We searched Google Play in October 2026 and found no official GamePigeon app.
What happens if an iPhone user sends a game to an Android friend? Nothing useful. Chats with Android phones use RCS or SMS, not iMessage, and GamePigeon doesn't appear there.
Does RCS let iPhone and Android play GamePigeon?
No. Since iOS 18, iPhones can send RCS messages to Android phones, with high-resolution photos, videos and links. Apple says RCS messages show in green bubbles. But Apple's comparison page lists Tapbacks, text effects, Live Stickers, message effects "and more" as iMessage features, and GamePigeon is an iMessage app. RCS made texting better, not gaming.
How can Android play iMessage games?
Officially, it can't. There is one unofficial route, and it takes work.
OpenPigeon is on Google Play and calls itself "a source-available reimplementation of GamePigeon for Android". It supports 8 Ball, 9 Ball, Mini Golf, Cup Pong, Darts, Chess, Four in a Row, Sea Battle, Word Hunt and more, and was updated in October 2026. But it says "OpenBubbles is required", because it uses iMessage to send game invites. It also says it is "Not affiliated with or supported by GamePigeon or Apple."
OpenBubbles brings iMessage and FaceTime to Android. Its site says you need "One-time access to a Mac or an always-online iPhone" to activate it. Self-hosting is free; the hosted plan is $16.99 a month, and when we checked, hosted devices were all taken.
Our take: if you are technical and own a Mac, it can work. For most couples it is easier to pick a game that is already on both stores.
Does GamePigeon work anymore?
Yes, between Apple devices. GamePigeon is still on the App Store with 24 games, including 8-Ball, Mini Golf, Basketball, Cup Pong, Archery, Darts, Chess, Four in a Row, Sea Battle, Word Hunt and Crazy 8. It has a 4.0 star rating and needs iOS 10 or later.
It isn't updated often. The last version, 2.2.6, came out on September 16, 2024. If a game won't open, update iOS, then check that iMessage is on and the chat shows blue bubbles. Wikipedia notes that Poker was removed at some point, so not every game you remember is still there.
What are good alternatives to iMessage games for Android?
All 8 picks below run on both iPhone and Android, so mixed couples can play. For games built into FaceTime, see our separate guide to GamePigeon alternatives for FaceTime and video calls.
1. Cupie: best for playing live on a video call
Cupie is a free video call app for couples. Many of its games will feel familiar to GamePigeon fans: Pool, Minigolf, Cup Pong, Chess, Four in a Row and Tic Tac Toe. The difference is that you play live while you see each other, not one turn per message. It also has Truth or Dare, Match, Solo, question decks and 239 quizzes. Five games are open from day one and the rest open as your call streak grows.

Miniclip's 8 Ball Pool lets you challenge a friend one on one. It is free with ads and in-app purchases from $0.99 to $7.99.

The official UNO! app has real-time matches with friends, Room Mode with house rules and 2v2. It is free with in-app purchases, and Google Play labels it "Contains ads".
6. Chess.com: best chess with lessons
Chess.com says its two-player online mode is free with friends. The free version shows ads; memberships add more lessons and analysis.
7. Lichess: best chess with no ads
