Quick answer

Type your city and your partner's city. The tool shows how far apart you are in miles and kilometers, the time difference, a rough flight or drive time, the exact halfway point, and up to four real cities near it where neither of you travels much further than the other. Save the couple card as an image or send the link. Everything runs in your browser.

This free distance between two cities calculator shows how far apart you and your partner are: the distance in miles and kilometers, the time difference, a rough flight or drive time, and fair cities to meet halfway. It also makes a card you can save and post. No sign-up, and nothing leaves your browser.

How does it work?

  1. Type both cities. Start typing and pick from about 5,500 cities. Add your names if you want them on the card.
  2. Read the numbers. The distance is a straight line over the curve of the Earth, the way a plane flies. The time difference follows daylight saving time on both sides.
  3. Find a place to meet. The tool finds the exact midpoint, then lists up to four real cities near it. For long distances these are cities with a large airport; for shorter trips, towns you can drive to.
  4. Share it. Save the card as an image, or send the link so your partner sees the same result.

How do we pick a fair halfway city?

A fair meeting point is not always the exact midpoint. Between New York and Rome the midpoint is in the Atlantic, and between two cities in the same country it may be a field with no hotel. So the tool ranks real cities by the longer of your two trips, with a small penalty when one trip is much longer than the other. The top city is the one where the person with the longer trip travels the least.

Before you book, check that both of you have direct flights or easy roads to the city, and the entry rules for both passports. Meeting halfway can cost more than one of you flying the whole way, so compare both. For a first meeting, keep your own room and a return ticket, and tell a friend where you will be.

How often should we visit?

There is no right number. It depends on money, time off and how far you are. As a rough guide from travel time alone:

The tool also keeps track of whose turn it is to travel, so the trips stay fair. For ideas between visits, see our long distance date ideas and long distance tips.

How do we deal with the time difference?

Distance and time difference are not the same thing. Two cities can be far apart and share a time zone, like Montreal and Miami, or be close and an hour apart. If you live in different time zones, our time zone converter and call planner finds the hours you are both free and plans a fair standing call. The best long distance relationship apps guide covers apps that show both clocks on your home screen.

FAQ

How do I find the distance between two cities?

Type both cities in the tool above. It shows the straight-line distance in miles and kilometers right away, plus the time difference and a rough travel time. Driving distance is usually longer than the straight line, because roads bend.

How do I find a halfway point between two cities?

The tool finds the exact midpoint along the curve of the Earth, then lists real cities near it. For long trips it uses cities with a large airport, ranked by the longer of your two trips, so neither of you carries most of the journey.

Why is the halfway point in the ocean?

For cities on different continents, the true midpoint often falls over water. That is why the tool also suggests the fairest real cities to meet in, such as an airport city that both of you can reach.

How long is the flight between New York and London?

New York and London are about 3,460 miles (5,570 km) apart in a straight line. Our rough nonstop estimate is about 7 h 30 min. Real flight times vary with the route, the direction and the wind, so check the airline schedule.

How is the flight time worked out?

It is a rough estimate: the straight-line distance at about 800 km/h, plus 30 minutes for takeoff and landing. It does not know real routes, stops or winds, so use it to compare options, not to book.

Can I share how far apart we are?

Yes. Tap Save the card to get an image with both cities, the distance and the time difference. Tap Send to your partner to share a link; it opens the same result on their phone.
