Should I Text Him, Her or Them?
A yes or no in five taps, with the reason and a text you can copy.
Quick answer
Text them if they texted last, if your text adds something new, or if nobody has texted yet. Wait until tomorrow if you texted last less than a day ago, if it is late at night, or if you have had a few drinks. After a day or more of silence, a light double text with something new is fine; after two unanswered texts, let them come to you. The helper above applies these rules to your answers and gives you texts to copy.
Should you text him, her or them right now? The helper above gives you one of four answers: yes, send it; yes, but lighter, when a softer text works better than the one in your head; not yet, when tomorrow is the better time; or no, when the next move is theirs. Each answer comes with the reason and texts you can copy in one tap.
How does the helper decide?
- Who texted last. If they did, replying is not double texting. It is just texting.
- How long ago. Under a day, give a quiet chat time. After a day or two, a light text is fine.
- What the last text was. A question waiting for an answer, a normal message, a "gn" that closed the chat, a text they left on read, or two texts of yours in a row. If you texted last, you can also say how fast they usually reply (optional), so a normal gap for them is not read as a bad sign.
- What you want to send. A reply, a hello, an invite, something funny, how you feel, or a thank-you after a date.
- How you are right now. Calm, anxious, a few drinks in, or upset. The last two always mean: sleep on it.
The time of day comes from your phone's clock. The same text reads differently at 2 pm and at 2 am. If the answer is wait, you can keep a text for the morning: open this page again after 9 am and it is ready to copy. Nothing leaves your phone.
Should I double text?
Yes, if your second text adds something new, like a plan, a new topic or a joke, and at least a day has passed. No, if it only asks why they have not answered, or if you already sent two in a row. Then the next move is theirs.
- Add something new. A second text works when it brings a new topic, a plan or a joke. "?" and "did you see my text" do not.
- Give it a day. People are at work, in class, asleep, on a night shift or a flight, or just not on their phone.
- Stop at two. After two texts in a row with no answer, the next move is theirs.
- Keep the big stuff for a call. Feelings, "what are we" and hard topics land better out loud.
How long should you wait to text back?
There is no magic number, and the "wait three hours so you look busy" kind of rule usually backfires: it turns texting into a game of who cares less. Reply when you have a moment and something to say. What makes a reply good is not its speed but whether it gives the other person something to answer. If your replies are short and flat, try our dry texter quiz for fixes that fit your style.
Quick rules by situation
| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| They asked you something | Reply when you see it. |
| You texted last | Give it a day before you add anything. |
| After a first date | Same night or next morning. |
| Two of your texts in a row, no answer | Stop. The next move is theirs. |
| Late at night or after a few drinks | Save it for the morning. |
How long to text back after a first date?
You do not need to wait. A short text the same night or the next morning is normal and kind: thank them, mention one thing you liked, and if you want a second date, say so. "I had a really good time tonight. Home safe?" works for almost anyone. If you sent that and have not heard back, give it a day before sending anything else. Pick After a date in the helper for texts that fit.
He takes hours to text back. Is that a bad sign?
Not by itself. Slow replies are often about work, classes or phone habits. If hours is his normal, pick "After a few hours" under "How fast does he usually reply?" in the helper and it will not treat the same gap as silence. Look at the pattern instead: does he reply within a day, start chats sometimes and make plans with a real day? Our Do They Like Me? signals check weighs exactly that, and has a lens for "is he losing interest". The same goes for her or them.
What to text when you are not sure what to say
Easy texts have one thing in common: they are easy to answer. A question about their day, a small thing that reminded you of them, or a simple plan. Need more ideas for a chat or a first call? Try our 21 questions game, these questions to ask a guy or games to play on FaceTime.
What this helper cannot do
- It does not know the person. If something about the chat worries you, trust that over any rule.
- It uses simple, plain rules, not studies. They are about kindness and timing, not winning.
- If someone has asked you to stop texting them, the answer is always no.
FAQ
Should I text him or wait?
If he texted last, reply: that is not chasing, it is texting. If you texted last less than a day ago, wait until tomorrow. If it has been a day or more, a light text with something new is fine. If you already sent two in a row, let him come to you.
Should I double text?
A double text is fine when it adds something: a new topic, a plan, a funny thing that made you think of them. It does not work when it only asks why they did not answer. Wait at least a day, keep it light, and stop at two.
How long should you wait to text back?
There is no rule that works for everyone, and waiting on purpose to look busy usually backfires. Reply when you have a moment and something to say. What matters more than speed is that your reply gives them something to answer.
He takes hours to text back. Does that mean he is not interested?
Not on its own. Work, classes and phone habits vary a lot. Look at the pattern instead: does he reply within a day, start chats sometimes and make plans? Our Do They Like Me? check reads those signals.
Should I text her or wait for her to text me?
Same rules for her, him or them: if she texted last, reply. If you texted last less than a day ago, wait. If a day or two has passed, send something light and new. Waiting on purpose to see who caves first only makes both of you guess.
How long should I wait to text after a first date?
You do not have to wait. A short thank-you the same night or the next morning is normal and kind: “I had a really good time tonight.” If you sent that and have not heard back, give it a day before sending more.
Is it ok to text first?
Yes. Someone has to. Texting first shows interest, and most people like being thought of. Keep it easy to answer, and send it in the daytime if you can.
