21 Questions Game: Rules, 5 Ways to Play and 126 Questions

Published 11 min readBy Niclas Illg

Quick answer

In the 21 questions game, one person asks the other up to 21 questions, the other must answer honestly, and then you switch. Agree on one or two passes before you start, and mix funny, deep and flirty questions. This page has the rules, five ways to play and 126 questions sorted by mood.

The 21 questions game is simple: one person asks the other 21 questions, and the other person has to answer every one honestly. Then you switch. That's it. Below are the rules, five ways to play, and 126 questions sorted by mood (for couples, flirty, deep, funny, new relationship, and over text or a call), so you never run out of things to ask.

What is the 21 questions game?

21 questions is a getting-to-know-you game for two or more people. You take turns asking each other questions, up to 21 each, and the only real rule is that you answer truthfully. Couples play it on dates, on long car rides, before bed and on late-night calls. Friends play it to break the ice.

It is easy to mix up with 20 questions, which is a different, much older game. In 20 questions, one person thinks of a thing and the others ask yes-or-no questions to guess it ("Is it bigger than a breadbox?"). That guessing game goes back to at least the 1780s. The 21 questions game is about the person, not a mystery object. Many people also know the name from "21 Questions," the 2003 50 Cent song with Nate Dogg, which is a love song built around a girlfriend's questions and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 that May.

How do you play 21 questions? (the rules)

  1. Pick who goes first. Flip a coin, or let the person who suggested the game ask first.
  2. The asker asks up to 21 questions. One at a time. Wait for the full answer before asking the next one.
  3. The answerer must answer honestly. No lying, no "I don't know" to dodge. That is the whole point.
  4. Everyone gets one or two passes. Agree on this before you start. A pass skips a question you really don't want to answer, but the asker gets to replace it.
  5. Switch. After 21 questions (or when you run out), the answerer becomes the asker.
  6. No repeats. You can't ask a question your partner already asked you. Find your own.

House rules couples like: follow-up questions are free (they don't count toward the 21), the asker has to answer their own question too if the other person asks "you?", and anything said during the game can't be used in an argument later.

Is it better to play 21 questions over text or on a video call?

Both work, but they feel different:

Way to playBest forDownside
Over textSlow, flirty back and forth during the dayEasy to overthink answers, and you miss the reaction
Phone callCar rides and walksYou can't see each other's face
Video callDeep and flirty rounds, long-distance date nightsNeeds a stable connection and a quiet space
In personAnything goesYou need to be together

For long-distance couples, a video call is the closest thing to sitting across from each other. If you want more ideas for calls, see our list of games to play over the phone.

Play question games together on Cupie

Cupie is a free video-call app for couples. You call your partner in the app and play games together, synced live on both phones. It isn't a 21 questions app as such, but it has question decks that work the same way: Get Deeper for real talk, Get Romantic for sweet questions, Get Silly for laughs and Get Spicy for flirty ones (the app is rated 18+ on the App Store for these). You both see the same card at the same time, so nobody has to read from another screen. There's also Truth or Dare and 239 quizzes, including Would You Rather and Who's More Likely To.

Get Romantic question card on a call. The Get Romantic deck in Cupie: both of you see the same question live on the call.
The Get Romantic deck in Cupie: both of you see the same question live on the call.

To start, you both download Cupie, one of you shares a private PIN, the other enters it, and you're linked. Tap to call and pick a deck. It works on iPhone (iOS 15+) and Android. The honest catch: you both need the app, and there's no text chat yet, so for the text version of 21 questions, keep using your normal messaging app.

"I absolutely love this app. The quizzes are great to get to learn your partner more and there's so much built it. I think it's perfect for long distance couples looking to build that connection." (MarieJordan00, App Store)

Tips for a better game of 21 questions

FAQ

What are the rules of 21 questions?

One person asks up to 21 questions, one at a time, and the other answers each one honestly. Then you switch roles. Most people allow one or two passes per player and ban repeating a question the other person already asked.

What is the difference between 20 questions and 21 questions?

20 questions is a guessing game: one person thinks of a thing and the others ask yes-or-no questions to guess it. 21 questions is a get-to-know-you game where you ask each other personal questions and answer honestly.

How long does the 21 questions game take?

A rapid-fire round takes about 3 minutes. A slow round with deep questions and follow-ups can take an hour or more, especially if you both answer every question.

Can you play 21 questions over text?

Yes. Over text, short questions work best, especially ones you can answer with a photo or a quick line. For deep or flirty rounds, a phone or video call is better because you hear or see the reaction.

What are good 21 questions to ask your crush?

Start light: what their perfect Friday night looks like, what they're into right now, and what always makes them laugh. Save deep and flirty questions for once you both feel comfortable.
