First Date Questions

With follow-ups. For him, her or anyone.

Published By Niclas Illg

Quick answer

Good first date questions start light and get more personal as you relax, with an ask, follow up, share loop: ask one question, ask a follow-up about the answer, then share your own. The deck above deals one question at a time by date stage, with the follow-up and your turn on every card.

Getting ready on the way there? Tap Pick 10 for tonight for a short list to screenshot. Already at the table? Tap Table for a dark screen you can glance at. Want to read everything first? All 170+ questions are listed below, each with its follow-up.

How do you use the deck on a date?

  1. Pick where you are. Warm up for the first 20 minutes, Getting real once you are both relaxed, Deeper for late in the night or a second date.
  2. Pick a tone if you want one. Easy, Funny, Deep or Flirty. Flirty here means playful, never explicit.
  3. Skip topics you do not want tonight. Exes, work, money, family or politics. Those questions leave the deck.
  4. Ask, follow up, share. Read the question, then the follow-up under it, then answer it yourself. That loop is what turns a question into a conversation.
  5. Tap the heart on the ones you like. They stay on this phone under Saved, so you can glance at your five favorites on the way there.

What is table mode?

Tap the Table button. The screen goes dark, the text gets small and one big Next button sits at the bottom, so you can check a question under the table or in the restroom without it looking like you are reading from a script. Tap anywhere for the next question, tap Back if you went too fast, and tap Done to leave. Once the page has loaded, the deck keeps working with no signal.

Why follow-up questions matter more than the first question

The first question is the easy part. What makes a date feel easy is the second one, the question that shows you listened. In a 2017 study from Harvard, people who asked more questions, and especially more follow-up questions, were liked more by the person they talked to. In speed dates, people who asked more follow-ups got more second-date yeses. So every card here has a follow-up, and a your-turn line so it never turns into an interview.

FAQ

What are good questions to ask on a first date?

Start light: the best part of their week, a place they keep going back to, a food opinion they would defend. Once you are both relaxed, ask about what they are proud of, a goal they are working on, or the best advice they ever got. Keep deep questions for late in the date or the second date.

How do I keep a first date conversation going?

Ask, follow up, share. Ask one question, ask a follow-up about their answer, then share your own answer. A Harvard study of speed dates found that people who asked more follow-up questions were more likely to get a second date. Every card in the deck has a follow-up for this reason.

What should you not ask on a first date?

Skip questions that feel like an interview or an audit: salary, why the last relationship ended, how many people they have dated, whether they want kids right now, and anything about their body. Use Skip topics in the deck to keep exes, money, work, family or politics off the table.

Are these first date questions for him or for her?

Both. Every question works for anyone you are dating, so you can use the same deck to ask a guy, a girl or someone nonbinary.

Can we use this on a video first date?

Yes. Tap Play on two screens and send the link. You both open the same shuffled deck, so when you tap Next at the same time you see the same question. No account or app needed.

What is table mode?

A dark full screen with small text and one big Next button, so you can glance at a question under the table without lighting up the room. Tap anywhere for the next one, swipe back if you skipped too fast, and tap Done to leave.

Do these questions work for a second date?

Yes. Pick Deeper. Those questions are about what you value, what you are figuring out and what you want next, which fits a second or third date better than a first.
